According to Indian media reports, some schools in the Indian state of Karnataka have suspended teachers for allowing hijab-wearing female students to sit for exams.

According to the report, one school allowed female students wearing hijab and one school allowed students wearing a burqa to sit for the examination.

As soon as the media highlighted the incident, the education department rushed to the spot to take notice.

Authorities have suspended five invigilators and two superintendents of the examination center, according to a report by Indian journalist Harish Upadhyay.

The Home Minister had said at the commencement of Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations in Karnataka that action would be taken against those wearing hijab in the examination hall.

Earlier this month, the Karnataka High Court had ruled that wearing a hijab in educational institutions was an "unnecessary" religious practice and refused to allow female students to wear a hijab in schools.
