People generally believe that artificial sweeteners are low in calories and that is why they are used in beverages and other foods instead of sugar thinking that they are good for health.

Artificial sweeteners are also used in toothpaste, candies, and chewing gum to prevent tooth decay.

The study was conducted by Charlotte Debras, Matilda Twier and colleagues at the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research and the University of Sobourne Paris Nord.

Research has shown that the use of artificial sweeteners can cause cancer.

The study was conducted on 102,865 adults in France who volunteered to be part of the study.

Prior to the study, the individuals provided information on their medical matters as well as their diet and lifestyle.

The dietary records of these individuals for the last 24 hours also provided information on the use of artificial sugars.

During the study, the medical team collected and analyzed information about the diagnosis of cancer.

"Research has shown that regular use of artificial sweeteners may be linked to an increased risk of cancer," the experts said in a joint statement from Towier, Debras and HealthLine.

The team also found an increased risk for a group of cancers, particularly those related to breast cancer and obesity, including colorectal (bowel) and prostate cancer.
