More oil imports from Russia will not be in India's interest: Virtual meeting with Modi

WASHINGTON (AFP, News Desk) - A virtual meeting between US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has seen a cloud of US anger over India's neutrality in the Ukraine conflict. White House Secretary of State Jane Sackie said that US President Biden had told Modi that his administration expects India to increase economic pressure on Russia over its intervention in Ukraine. Increasing oil imports would not be in India's interest but offered that the US could also provide alternative oil imports to India. On the occasion, Modi said that India and US are natural partners for talks in Ukraine and Russia. He also said that India had provided medical assistance to Ukraine. The United States has previously warned India to reduce its dependence on Russian imports to meet its energy needs. Russia's daily oil and natural gas production per barrel fell to 15 million between April 1 and 6, compared to an average of more than 11 million in March, according to a meeting between Biden and Modi on Monday. Earlier, India and the United States held two-plus-two level talks in which US Secretary of State Anthony Blanken, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Indian Foreign Minister Subramanian J. Shankar and Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh participated.
